Preparation
Preparing for the MELAB
You may prepare for the MELAB by becoming familiar with the format of the test so you have an idea what to expect.
Writing
You may prepare for the writing portion by writing on a topic for 30 minutes. Then, ask yourself:
- How well do you communicate your ideas?
- Do you write clearly?
- Does your writing show that you have a wide range of vocabulary?
- Are the words you use appropriate?
Listening
You may prepare for the listening test by giving yourself frequent opportunities to listen to spoken English.
Speaking
The MELAB Speaking Test is a one-on-one oral interaction between a speaking test examiner and a candidate.
- The best way to prepare for the speaking test is to speak English regularly with proficient users of English
- The speaking test is conversational in nature, so being an active participant in conversations will give you opportunities to improve your oral communication skills
- Your oral communications may be enhanced by activities such as listening to the radio, watching television, and viewing films
- You can also benefit from any speaking activities on which you get feedback on your spoken English
The MELAB speaking test examiner will be evaluating how well you speak English with regard to your speech (fluency and intelligibility), interactive skills (conversational development and comprehension), and language (vocabulary and grammar).
